4MATIC four-Door GLC 300

RWD 4-Door GLC 300

Equally a tangential—and far more sophisticated—replacement for the GLK, the savvy 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLC is a far better match for American wants and needs.

Mercedes-Benz has totally revitalized its production lineup over the past several years, first by bolstering information technology at the roots, with swoopy new meaty CLA-Form sedans, then GLA-Grade crossovers to lucifer. That's left room up the model line for the once-pocket-size C-Class to get a far more than sophisticated (even sexy) sedan. And now, inside the bounds of the crossover utility form, Mercedes-Benz is applying some of that same mojo to its new, not-quite-midsize GLC-Grade models.

The 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class is the completely redesigned replacement for the Mercedes-Benz GLK that was, up until recently, the smallest, most affordable Mercedes crossover.

At kickoff look, in that location's absolutely no doubt that it'due south all in the family unit. The current GLK has followed a form that's considerably boxier than the larger One thousand-Class (now chosen the GLE); simply with the new 2016 GLC, Mercedes-Benz moves to a somewhat more rounded profile and softer details—yet a front-end design that's far more hit. While nosotros have to admit we're going to miss the GLK's earnest, chiseled lines, the GLC takes a step upmarket, and it now closely resembles the GLE-Course—to the degree that if you don't run across it next to 1, you might be left wondering which one yous're seeing.

Review continues beneath

It'southward true there's a smaller gap; there's now only well-nigh 6 inches' difference in length between the two. Just similar the C-Grade and its redesign for 2015, the 2016 GLC gets a significant bump in overall length (4.6 inches) and wheelbase (four.seven inches)—plus a couple of inches more acme—that should result in a significantly roomier interior. Information technology results in 2.2 inches more rear leg room, plus a space that's easier to go into and out of, overall. Cargo space increases as role of the GLC'south "growth strategy," every bit the automaker puts it, with the cargo floor both longer and wider than before. Hands-gratuitous (activated past an underneath foot swipe) tailgate operation is available, and the air interruption'southward lowest mode also allows easier loading.

While the GLC might be seen every bit an understudy of the GLE (the ML, to refresh), it's no poseur; the design inside is also very different and a major upgrade from the GLK's simpler await. The 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class goes with a design that'southward clearly influenced by that of the electric current C-Class—particularly in the nuance, where it follows a rather horizontal look that's bisected by a broad center panel and heart stack and a cluster of round vents, with a standalone infotainment screen standing atop information technology. The inlaid metallic bezels and soft-touch materials add upwardly to a bejeweled wait that used to be reserved for M-B'south most expensive models.

The 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLC arrives for its showtime model year only in rear-bike-drive GLC300 and all-wheel-drive GLC300 4Matic models, both powered by a frisky 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 making 241 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque (at a very attainable, diesel-like 1,300 rpm). It's paired up with a nine-speed automated transmission, and we found the powertrain combination in an early drive to be responsive and very smooth in all but some low-speed driving. The powertrain too has Eco, Comfort, Sport, Sport+, and Individual modes, each with control over the drive system, steering, and suspension (if equipped). The Eco mode maximizes long-distance benumbed by freeing the wheels; a smoother torso with a long list of aero measures also assistance boost fuel economy significantly over the approachable gasoline models. Diesel fuel models are initially missing from the lineup but expected to bring together later in 2016, equally 2017 models.

It rides on a four-link front end pause with upper wishbones, and a five-link rear axle. The 4Matic all-wheel drive organization in the GLC sends torque to the forepart and rear wheels in a 45/55-separate, via a planetary differential—with the stability-control organisation helping it get traction to the wheels that demand information technology.

A steel-leap suspension with variable damping is standard, while Air Body Command with Dynamic Select settings help allow better comfort as well every bit potent torso control in quick maneuvers. The automaker says that leap and damping forces can adapt within lx milliseconds. Additionally, a Sport+ setting allows the chassis to be lowered by most an inch. Mercedes-Benz has put tremendous work into motel dissonance, examining the GLC'southward "psycho-acoustic backdrop" to help lower various noise components and enable easier chat. While that seems to have worked wonders with route noise and general din in the cabin, we still noticed a fair amount of wind racket in an early on bulldoze.

The GLC is built on a new body that's related to the C-Course sedan and pairs high-strength steels with aluminum and plastics, to relieve nigh 110 pounds versus the previous GLK. Full vehicle weight has dropped by 176 pounds versus a comparable GLK, Mercedes says, which should put entry adjourn weights at a bit beneath the four,000-pound mark.

Safety should be fully up to the high bar ready by all the other latest Mercedes-Benz products. Mercedes-Benz's Attention Assist (drowsy-driving alert) system is standard on the GLC, as is the Collision Prevention Assist Plus frontal warning system. With a Driving Assistance Package, the GLC adds adaptive prowl control with steering assist, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, bullheaded-spot monitors with rear traffic alerts, lane-keep assist and Pre-Safe Plus. There are new windowbags for the outer seating positions, plus thorax/pelvis bags for those in front, and a human knee pocketbook for the driver. The automaker besides says that a stiffer passenger compartment is at the core of the new torso construction—so while we can't attest to its safety yet, we can say that this, the outgoing GLK's great IIHS ratings, and Mercedes-Benz's reputation for safe all indicate to the GLC also beingness a very skilful pick for the safety-minded.

A 7.0-inch infotainment screen is standard on the GLC, and it includes Bluetooth, USB connectivity, and an optimized sound organization dubbed FrontBass. Navigation tin be added, as well as a heated steering bicycle, heated rear seats, concert-hall Burmester audio, and even the fragrance system that debuted on the S-Form. With its move upmarket, the GLC gets a wide range of advent options, with wheels ranging up to 20 inches, an AMG Line model, "designo" bazaar-look packages, and a Dark Package that brings downwards the chrome gene with enough of gloss blackness. A caput-upwardly brandish is newly available in the GLC, and helps equally a companion to some of the active-rubber gear, and Agile Parking Assist will exist bachelor on the GLC, helping to steer the vehicle into and out of parallel and perpendicular spots.

The base of operations GLC300 manages 22 mpg city, 28 highway, 24 combined, co-ordinate to the EPA. With all-wheel drive those ratings drib to 21/28/24 mpg.

The 2016 GLC-Class wears a conservative look on the outside, simply with its rich interior design, it charms from the inside out.

At first look, at that place'south admittedly no doubt that it's all in the family unit. The GLK has followed a course that'due south considerably boxier than the larger M-Class (now called the GLE); just with the new 2016 GLC, Mercedes-Benz moves to a somewhat more rounded profile and softer details—yet a front-end design that'southward far more striking.

From beyond the parking lot, the GLC looks like it was 3-D-printed from almost the aforementioned pattern, admitting at 95 percentage or so. That's no put-down; the GLC'southward design is role of a concerted motion from Mercedes-Benz to harmonize its pattern amid vehicles of the same type. While we have to admit we're going to miss the GLK's earnest, chiseled lines, the GLC takes a footstep upmarket, and it at present closely resembles the GLE-Course—to the degree that if you don't run across information technology adjacent to one, yous might be left wondering which 1 you're seeing.

Up close, the GLC's slightly different set of proportions become more apparent, and there's a scrap more subtlety—and some voluptuous undertones in the sail metallic—that requite the GLC a little more charm from the outside, either compared to the GLE, or to other models in its size class similar the BMW X3 or Audi Q5.

Although not everyone's going to exist in love with the exterior, few will call back that the cabin pattern of the GLC is anything curt of stunning. Information technology'due south graceful, flowing, and flamboyant, all at once, with rounded contours, matched past a horizontal orientation overall, and punctuated past just the right amount of brightwork, matte-metallics, and those nicely detailed, functional round vents that are showing upwardly throughout the Mercedes-Benz model lineup.

Within, the GLC's dash blueprint follows a rather horizontal look that's bisected by a broad centre console and center stack and a cluster of round vents, with a standalone infotainment screen standing atop it. The inlaid metallic bezels and soft-bear upon materials add upwards to a bejeweled wait that used to be reserved for Thousand-B's nigh expensive models.

Considering your orientation is and so unlike in the GLC, you might not even notice that the dash and interior design is substantially the aforementioned every bit in the C-Class sedan. Once more it's no error, as the GLC is closely based on the C; and nosotros like how in keeping with this design, Mercedes left all vestiges of rugged SUV cues at the door.

There'southward plenty of room for expression here, too, and the GLC isn't bound to the sedate exterior colors and interior hues that used to keep Mercedes-Benz models looking a petty stilted. With eleven exterior colors, five upholstery themes, and 3 different wood tones (standard Linden Woods, or optional Blackness Ash Open-Pore Woods or Black Walnut Forest), plus a Sport Bundle and a Night Package, there are a lot of different looks here.

In all, that includes five different bicycle designs—including five-spoke Himalaya Gray alloys exclusive to the Sport Package two AMG Black designs exclusive to the Nighttime Package. Otherwise the Dark Package replaces some of the chrome with night trims and complements that with 19- or 20-inch wheels.

Review continues below

The GLC drives less like the larger GLE (M-Class) SUV that it bears a likeness to, and far more like what it is—a tall railroad vehicle based on the C-Form.

The 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Form may flex its muscles with the stance (and some of the visual cues) of an SUV, but from behind the cycle it feels quite different, similar an agile, responsive, and relatively lite-driving car—albeit one with a somewhat higher driving position.

When you get downwardly to information technology, that's what the GLC is; rather than a true, focused SUV, information technology'due south essentially a tall-railroad vehicle version of the C-Form, buffed upward with unique sail metal, upgraded components, and boosted ride height. In that location's nothing incorrect with that approach; in fact, information technology gives the GLC-Class an excellent starting indicate and some pinnacle-notch over-the-road driving traits.

For 2016, there are essentially only ii versions of the GLC-Grade, performance-wise: the rear-wheel-bulldoze GLC300, and the all-bike-bulldoze GLC300 4Matic. Both pack a 2.0-liter turbocharged, straight-injection inline-4 engine, making 241 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. In both versions it's mated to a new 9-speed automated.

In an early drive, we were only able to drive the European-market GLC250, which has a lower, 211-hp version of that same engine. There are no plans to offer that lower-output version, but don't be surprised if next year or the following year in that location's a V-half dozen back in the lineup; a diesel is confirmed for the 2017 model yr, while a GLC350e plug-in hybrid is in the works for model-year 2018.

Based on our experience with that engine in other M-B products, you should expect strong performance, specially in the low and mid revs, which gives the turbo four the feel of a large V-6 in terms of actual output. Meanwhile the 9-speed automatic shifts unobtrusively, although its shift timing varies a lot betwixt the car's Comfort and Sport+ modes, and if you've been driving quickly or forget that it'southward in Sport or Sport+ way, it tin can lurch at low speed.

We only drove fully loaded models that were equipped with the 4-corner air suspension, which also changes its behavior depending on the Dynamic Select drive mode. If it'due south anything like what's offered in the C-Form, we might actually adopt it—or at to the lowest degree declare that it's not worth the added toll. The air break tends to dial out body lean and roll to a degree that it's sometimes difficult to anticipate the GLC's cornering capabilities—which are, by the style, pretty impressive for a crossover such every bit this. Beyond these models, steering is about right for the mission—meaning that while there's actually no feedback from the road hither, it tracks well on eye, centers nicely out of tight corners, and ever feels nicely weighted effectually tight corners.

Get all-bicycle drive in the GLC (badged "4Matic"), and past default it'll ship 45 percent of torque to the front, 55 percent to the rear wheels. With a multi-disc clutch system, information technology can smoothly and continuously vary the torque split as needed, and reroute or finesse that among wheels with the stability control system by activating private brakes.

No versions of the GLC offer a low range or a true center differential lock. Overseas-market versions of the GLC will offer an Off-Road Bundle that brings the electronic equivalent of a center diff lock, plus an uprated version of the air suspension that allows a college (8.9-inch) maximum ride peak, various underbody upgrades, and an off-route-oriented bumper design that allows better approach and departure angles. In the U.S., that parcel won't be offered, but there will be an Off-Route Appearance Parcel that includes the off-route bumper design (and its better angles).

Review continues beneath

The GLC is smartly designed inside, and that holds in almost every respect; it may even be more adept at people-hauling than the larger GLE.

The 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLC is almost 5 inches longer and 2 inches wider than its predecessor, the GLK, and that dimensional gain (including a v-inch heave in wheelbase) goes right where it's best used: the back seat.

That makes it i of the most spacious luxury compact crossover, short of true mid-sizers like the Lexus RX and BMW X5, and Acura MDX. Next to the segment leader on the comfort-oriented side, the RX, the GLC is 9 inches shorter, simply feels nearly equally spacious.

In front, the driving position varies quite a bit from that of the larger GLE (M-Grade), in that you're less "on" the vehicle, perched forwards, and more than "in" the vehicle. That said, the instrument panel keeps the beltline ahead depression, and the driver gets a neat vantage point outward and ahead.

The seats are fully upwardly to the standards of Mercedes-Benz's other (larger and more expensive) vehicles. In that location isn't a tremendous amount of side bolstering in them, but with a wide range of adaptability and extendable thigh bolsters, they're the kind of seats that should help go along fatigue abroad in hours of driving.

Compared to the new C-Class sedan and its more "expressive" roofline, the GLC offers some much more practical accommodations in back. The boosted vehicle height pays off; dorsum-seat headroom in the GLC is great—fifty-fifty with the moonroof—and the seats are contoured in a way that should accommodate adults, not just kids. Doors are cut to brand the most of the space, and adults can also easily get in without contorting or ducking heads.

Width is where the GLC shows its not-quite-mid-size dimensions most; you tin fit three adults across in back, only they need to be light-to-medium framed and they'll exist making contact.

In back, the GLC-Class is about the ideal height for piece of cake loading and unloading, and there's an official 20.v cubic anxiety of infinite behind the dorsum seat. The hatch opens high, and in that location's a pocket-size storage pocket on i side of the cargo floor. The rear seat backs are split forty/xx/forty, and it's easy to flip them forward. If we had one nit to selection, information technology would be that the rear seat backs don't flip forwards to a perfectly flat position; with some weight on the seat, it would be close plenty, still.

The GLC rides quietly and in a smooth just very precise, well-controlled manner—with the asterisk hither that we still haven't driven this vehicle with its base (not-air-interruption) version. Road coarseness is well filtered-out, and yous only notice the engine and its fibroid annotation when pressing information technology difficult. We did find some noteworthy wind dissonance at typical U.Due south. cruising speeds, with a slight crosswind, even so.

Review continues below

Just like all other models in the current Mercedes-Benz stable, the 2016 GLC heaps on the agile-safety items.

The 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class is an all-new vehicle. Notwithstanding with its underpinnings quite extensively based on the C-Grade sedan, and a very impressive set of active-rubber features and options, we tin can make some projections on this model'southward safety.

The current C-Course has earned a mix of crash-examination ratings, including v-star federal ratings overall, and "Good" side touch and moderate overlap forepart results from the IIHS; simply full results oasis't yet been conducted past the IIHS. Nosotros're anticipating that the GLC will beat both the C-Class and the larger GLE (K-Class) in sales, however, so nosotros wouldn't rule out a full roster of U.S. crash tests in the future.

It's important to notation, however, that you can't but deport over the C-Grade's rubber ratings to the GLC. It's structure is somewhat different—perhaps different in fundamental aspects of occupant protection—and it also rides several inches higher than the sedan.

The set of prophylactic features in the C-Course run far and broad, to provide skillful occupant protection likewise every bit go on the driver (and passengers) out of trouble if attention should wane or give an added margin to the drive in accident abstention.

The 2016 GLC300 models volition come up standard Attending Aid, which helps place drowsy driving and gives the driver a warning; it also includes the new Collision Prevention Assist Plus (CPA+) organization, one that may come in very handy at moments of inattention. When the speed differential of a vehicle ahead (or object) is less than almost 30 mph, the system tin can automatically brake—commencement with about lx percentage try, and then fully at later on stages—to reach a full end and avert a collision; and for speed differentials more than than that, the system can assist reduce the severity of a collision. At that place's also blind-spot monitors with cross-traffic assists, and a system called Pre-Rubber Plus with rear-terminate collision prevention, which does exactly what it sounds similar—identifying impending rear-end collisions, flashing warning lights, and priming other protective systems.

When optioned with the Distronic Plus active cruise-control system, the GLC provides steering assist to assist keep yous in your lane of travel. Its intervention is more subtle than other such systems, and we found that we were able to steer smoothly into the shoulder of the road; yet when we took our hands off the wheel, it applied the correct steering inputs, before somewhen scolding us to go on both easily on the wheel.

Standard airbag systems in the GLC-Class include combined thorax/pelvis side bags for the driver and front passenger, equally well as a windowbag covering both seat rows. Separate rear side bags are a special-order option.

Outward visibility is actually quite skillful in the GLC; and while rearward visibility when parking or backing upwards is the only exception, the camera system is very helpful and combines views into i seamless visualization around to both sides.

The Mercedes-Benz GLC gets no brusque shrift here to Mercedes' larger models, in terms of options—but we think it's quite the deal if you go easy on them.

The 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLC, similar many of the German language automaker's more recent products, makes a lot more sense from a value standpoint if yous can resist many of the packages, a la bill of fare options, and advent upgrades that beckon.

Standard equipment has been increased versus the GLK and now includes a touchpad for improved functionality of the COMAND infotainment system, equally well as keyless ignition, a power driver's seat with memory settings, a rearview photographic camera system, a power tailgate, and power folding mirrors.

Nevertheless few will go out it at that. If you've considered whatever other Mercedes-Benz product in recent years—or any Deutschland luxury model, for that affair—you'll exist familiar with the idea that you can potentially add $fifteen,000 or more in options.

Farther to the betoken, some of those sought-afterward items are included every bit part of somewhat pricey selection packages. For instance, an Interior Package adds leather upholstery, ventilated seats, ambient lighting, a storage package, and MB-Tex (soft-bear on synthetic) nuance and upper-door trim, while a Premium Parcel brings satellite radio, proximity key, heated front seats, blind-spot monitors, and an Air conditioning ability outlet. And there's fifty-fifty an Avant-garde Parking Help Bundle that includes parking assist with an fantabulous surroundings-view camera system.

A la carte, yous can add a ability passenger seat with memory, a caput-up display, heated rear seats, a panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting, automated highbeams, and illuminated door sills. Heated front seats are also optional—perchance the one odd item that should be standard.

Review continues below

The 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLC300 is on par with primal rivals, if not amend than them; but the real efficiency moves aren't due until afterwards.

Fuel economy ratings for the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLC are largely better than the GLK information technology replaced, and much ameliorate than the V-6-powered GLK350 that was retired.

The base GLC300 manages 22 mpg metropolis, 28 highway, 24 combined, co-ordinate to the EPA. With all-cycle drive those ratings drop to 21/28/24 mpg.

In that location won't be any diesel fuel or plug-in hybrid versions of the GLC-Course offered in its first model year; just both are on the fashion—for the 2017 and 2018 model years, respectively.

If you live in the UK- Ireland or Austrilia please don't buy i of these cars not with anyone'southward coin.
I do really fell deplorable for the dealer service people as they are stuck betwixt the customer and MB. The service manger at my dealer told me he has never seen anything like this and finds the MB response unbelieveable.

RHD cars judder and hop and brand a very loud clonking noise when on or shut to full lock when parking or driving on tight local roads some owner liken it to a broken worn bulldoze shaft joint, do check out the videos posted on you-tube before y'all purchase a RHD GLC.
LHD cars are fine.
The conversion to RHD was botched by MB or was done under pressure to have GLC in RHD where GLK was never released in RHD. This issues will not be fixed past MB, this is proven past the contempo requirement for UK customers to sign a disclaimer that you have this problems as normal. To be articulate this is not a bit of tyre scrubbing. The effect is as if you left the centre diff lock on a 4X4 and bulldoze on paved road simply much worse. MB have said is tyre related and we demand to fit wintertime tyres, this may mask the issue but I accept had this effect since the summertime. Again if you live in a RHD market practise even consider this car, LHD cars do not seem to have this result at all. I tried to trade my car 11 months quondam against a X3 -Q5 or F Pace no dealer wanted to deal does that tell you something!
